In film crew jargon, this gruesome-sounding phrase is simply a boom microphone fitted with a fuzzy windscreen (a smaller windscreen is sometimes called a dead kitten while an extra large windscreen is called a dead wombat).
This piece of equipment isn’t necessary in indoor studio shoots but can make all the difference in capturing quality audio outdoors on a windy day. Not only that, but it’s cheap and relatively easy to make your own!
P.S. Always secure your dead cat if shooting outdoors so you don’t get outfoxed by wildlife.
